Frustration

October 21, 2010

This was written as part of a prompt for my writing group.  However, it also came at just the perfect time for me to express exactly  how frustrated I felt.  In reading it out loud to my writing group I recieved very strong reactions and responses, just as good poetry is suppose to.  They were flabbergasted, sympathetic, and one commented hoping that he hadn't been included,  and something about how well I hold a grudge... but said smilingly.  I laughed and said that while every on of these statements has been made to me, or very similar to it, it wasn't about the comments it was about the total package of frustration that occurs therein.  So I wrote this in the hopes of releasing frustration and the truth is that it did exactly what I needed it to.  It let me let it all go.

So here is my Frustration.

Frustration

Your pants are too tight
Your tattoo is showing
You can’t wear short sleeves
Don’t show your legs
Your hair isn’t right
You need different shoes
Why don’t you wear makeup
You should paint your nails
Your slacks are too short
You should learn another language
Why don’t you cut your hair
You should get different glasses
Your feet are so big
You have many freckles
You should dye your hair to hide the gray
You shouldn’t eat so many sweets
Don’t drink that, it’s bad for you.
Here have some chocolates
Why aren’t you at your desk when I want you
Why didn’t you answer your phone
When are you going to join in
You should be here
You should be there
Why didn’t you
Why aren’t you
When are you going to

I will not write you a recommendation because I think you can do better than that

Nothing you do here will ever matter
You should wear more comfortable clothes
Your neckline is too low/too high/wrong
You don’t get enough sun
Please wear dresses
you should wear it up/down/like this
heels/boots/flats/sandals
eyeshadow/blush/ you are wearing it wrong
decorate/style/ hey, I like that color
too long, too big, too small, too colorful
another, another, another, another
grow it long/ wear it short/up/down/
smaller, bigger, contacts
We don’t carry your size
so many freckles, cover, conceal, hide, no sun
red, auburn, dark, light
here, I bought these for you
Diet, sugar free, oh those are even worse
I know about your diet, but you like them
Yes, you have posted hours, but I want you now
I called you at the one time you were away
I want to see you more active on campus
Now
Now
Do it
Here
be a bigger part

We won’t take you because you are mediocre at best

You will be forgotten as soon as you leave

You should smile more
